Point Me At The Sky / Careful With That Axe, Eugene - 7" Single - 1978 Italy Reissue

This is one of four Italian 7 inch singles reissues from 1978. The reason for the reissues is not clear and I haven't found any real answer for it. Some guessed that it was done to coincide with David Gilmour's new album and making some money when no Pink Floyd album or tour is happening. This single includes 2 songs:

The first one is 'Point Me At The Sky', which was originally released in December 1968 as a single and wasn't included in any album.

The B-Side of the single includes 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene', an instrumental piece that was later could be found in the compilation album 'Relics', in the album 'Ummagumma' as a live version  and was recorded again for the soundtrack of the film 'Zabriskie Point' by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni. In the soundtrack it appeared with a different title as 'Come In Number 51'.

The single comes in a picture sleeve with the picture of clouds over snowy mountains on both sides of the single, and the words 'Pink Floyd - Point Me At The Sky' on top.

An Introduction To Syd Barret - 2010 Compilation CD

On October 4th, 2010, 'An Introduction to Syd Barrett' is released in the UK and Europe by EMI/Harvest Records. It is a brand new collection that will bring together for the first time the tracks of Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett on one compilation, spanning the period 1967-1970.

David Gilmour, who originally worked with Syd Barrett on the solo albums by co-producing 'The Madcap Laughs' and as producer of 'Barrett' has taken the role of executive producer for the album and has, along with Damon Iddins and Andy Jackson at Astoria Studios, remixed five tracks including 'Octopus', 'She Took A Long Cold Look' (now renamed... Cool Look), 'Dominoes' and 'Here I Go' on which David Gilmour has added and played bass guitar. Pink Floyd's 'Matilda Mother' also receives a fresh 2010 mix. Brand new artwork has been provided by Storm Thorgerson and his estimable studio.

In terms of tracks selected, it is a nice mix of band stuff and solo material, and will indeed prove an interesting introduction to Barrett and his music for the newcomer. An addition to 'An Introduction To Syd Barrett' is the previously unreleased 20-minute instrumental 'Rhamadan', produced by former Pink Floyd and Syd co-manager Peter Jenner. It is to be offered as an extra downloadable track with the CD.

The CD is presented in a smart Digipack sleeve with the lyrics included in a 20-page booklet. It is the first time Barrett's lyrics are printed on official release.

Tour/'75 - 12" Sampler - Pink Floyd

This is a re-post to a post written in the Hebrew language a very long time ago. One of the first few posts in this blog.

This LP is an official promotional sampler from the U.S.A. It is not a bootleg or a fake or rip off as uneducated guesses might suggest. As my friends from the Yeeshkul! community say, there might be two reasons for releasing this LP at that time in 1975:

(1) "I seem to recall this was done because CBS secured worldwide release rights to Pink Floyd after 'Dark Side Of The Moon'. EMI only had Europe left and so released 'A Nice Pair' and then followed up with 'Tour/'75' to keep radio play of EMI products".

(2) "From what I understand it was called 'Tour 75' because it was released during 1975 to coincide with the tour that year. As was mentioned before, it was strictly a promo deal and has nothing to do with live stuff. Sort of like the 'now that you have seen them live, here is a sampler from other albums they made' thing".

It has a white cover with Pink Floyd, Tour/75' and song titles stamped on it.

The Wall Singles Box Set - Pink Floyd - 7 Inch 2011

This is a special release for Record Store Day / Black Friday 2011. It's a box set containing 3 Pink Floyd 7 inch singles - Replicas of old singles from the album 'The Wall' with the original artwork from their initial release. It also includes a poster and a 7-inch single adapter.  The adapter is held in a small slit inside the box and has the famous hammers logo from 'Run Like Hell' single. Each box is individually numbered and mine is number '11651'.

The three singles are:
'Another Brick In The Wall (Part II) / 'One Of My Turns'
'Comfortably Numb / Hey You'
'Run Like Hell' / 'Don't Leave Me Now'

It is a very nice release and a good collectible for Pink Floyd collectors. There is a very nice trick when you open it and it looks like you are removing some bricks from the wall. The box itself has the cover art of 'The Wall' album. The official data from the Record Store Day website says there are only 7500 copies made for US and 4000 copies made for international distribute (11500 overall). Since my copy is numbered 11651 and was ordered from the US, and I also saw a copy numbered over 14000, I guess there are more copies made and some were reserved for certain stores and other sources.

Another Brick In The Wall (Part II) (3:13) / One Of My turns (3:37)
This single has a cardboard cover with Pink Floyd written on the front cover and song titles plus credits on the back cover. There is the original EMI labels & artwork from The Wall album.

Comfortably Numb (3:59) / Hey You (4:40)
This one is also in a cardboard  cover with the original Japanese artwork. The front cover has the wall with some bricks missing, and through it you can see some figures from Gerald Scarfe artwork of album, including the famous hammers. The back cover has the song titles and credits and also features the lyrics of 'Comfortably Numb' in English and Japanese. the labels are orange EMI labels. In this single, the song 'Comfortably Numb' is shorter than the original album version which is 6:24 minutes.

The front cover of this cardboard has Pink Floyd written on it at the top right corner, and in the middle there is the round hammers icon. The back cover has the song titles and credits. The labels are the original EMI labels with the artwork from The Wall album.

The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn - Brazil - FAKE

This post is made for you, other Pink Floyd collectors, as a warning that there are fakes out there.

Back in the days before smart-phones, I was going to some record stores, and when I saw something I didn't have, I couldn't really check its origin or if it's a fake or not. These days I just Google the catalog number  and there it is. So I bought a fake Brazilian issue of 'The Piper At the Gates of Dawn' in a shop nearby without knowing it's a fake. Anyway, i'm not going to sell it back to anyone and it's still a part of my collection, but I won't buy any fakes anymore, i'm more aware now.

Release information: Picture disc, known as printed in Brazil in 2004, it was circulating as a limited edition of 500 copies only, one side shows the original cover of the album with the text "Pink Floyd" and the EMI-Harvest white logo in the upper side, the other side shows a collage of the album cover (front/back) with credits and track listing. No matrix numbers. Cover made of a transparent plastic, although since February 2010 have seen the classic covers, probably of English reprints. Cat. Number: 703106442901

The Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd - Russia (1992)

This album was produced by the Center of rock'n'roll congregations of united Evangelist-Lutheran churches of Russia, St. Petersburg. This release was not official. It does not include the phrase "There is no Dark Side of the Moon ... " at the end of the record. No such organization exists. This name and the phrase "Recorded from radio broadcast" (found on the records labels) were put there by AnTrop to resolve copyright problems, should such occur. On different records, this phrase might read slightly different.

AnTrop was named after the legendary Russian underground producer and sound engineer, Andrey Tropillo, who in 1990, on the wave of "perestroika," became the head of the St. Petersburg branch of Melodia. Since there was much turmoil in Russia at the time, he made the St. Petersburg branch independent of central headquarters and started releasing a series of classic Rock albums. These releases were not legitimate. They started with releases by The Beatles, Jesus Christ - Superstar, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and eventually Pink Floyd. All these records were released using Melodia facilities, but AnTrop was operating as an independent record label and was putting the Antrop logo and their own numbers and copyrights on the covers. However, since all the records were printed in Melodia owned and run facilities, AnTrop had to give its releases additional Melodia catalog numbers, which is why there are both catalog numbers on the releases. Antrop is the label that released most of the Pink Floyd albums in Russia. "P" in the AnTrop catalog numbers stands for Russian letter "P" (that looks like Greek "Pi").

At the top is an oval that has the AnTrop logo in the middle and "CONSUMMARUM IN UNIUM" and "St Petersburg" in gothic font across top and bottom respectively. The left side of the oval has "A"(Greek alpha) and the right side of the oval has the Greek "Omega." The bottom half of the label has "Stereo 33" and the Catalog Number "P91 00093/94." Below the middle hole there are the song titles and " "Recorded from broadcast" (all in Russian).

Learning To Fly (Edit) \ Terminal Frost - Pink Floyd 7" Single

Released just a week after the album, 'Learning To Fly' was the biggest hit out of the 1987 album 'A Momentary Lapse Of Reason'. It Reached #70 on the Billboard hot 100 charts and #1 on the Billboard album rock tracks together with another song from the album: 'On The Turning Away'. The song was written by Gilmour which once said in an interview that this song describes some of his feelings about being the new Pink Floyd leader. This edit of the song is about 30 seconds shorter than the album version. The B-side on this vinyl is the instrumental 'Terminal Frost'.

This copy is the U.S. release, released September 15' 1987. It has a full color picture sleeve. The front cover has a picture of a man's feet with flowers and plants growing out of them. The back cover has a picture of an air strip and the credits on the bottom.

A Harvest Sampler - 12" Sampler - Pink Floyd

This is Harvest Records promo sampler that includesonly one Pink Floyd song, Point Me at the Sky, and the Kate Bush song, Man With the Child in His Eyes. Other artists include Little River Band, Tom Robinson Band, King Harry, Wire, Be-Bop Deluxe, Strapps, and Focus. This Sampler was released in 1978 to Radio Stations only and it is said on the back cover and label: "For airplay only not for sale".

From the back cover: Harvest label is a special label that was created by EMI in England in 1969 as an outlet for more progressive acts. The First Harvest album to be released in the United States was Quatermass (July, 1970). Since then the label has been the home of groups ranging from the well-known (Pink Floyd, Triumvirat, Be-Bop Deluxe and Little River Band) to the obscure (Sadistic Mika Band and Rinky Dink & Crystal Set). The Harvest label has been released in dozens of countries arounf the world although the roster has varied from country to country. Even so, the distinctive green and yellow label has always been unique and prestigious. Here, for the first time, is a Harvest sampler album prepared for promotional use only. Since it contains

several seldom-heard tracks, it will undoubtably become an immediate collector's item. Enjoy!

This is a very special cut by Pink Floyd. It was their fifth and last Harvest single to be released in England. Their Dark Side Of The Moon has sold more than five million units in the U.S. alone and repeatedly jumps back on the national sales charts (it is also one of the best-selling 8-track tapes ever released on any label).

Pink Floyd On Forty-Five – Book by Charles Beterams

This book was published this month and arrived shortly after to me. This book is a definitive discography of the band's 7-inch singles from all over the world, from countries such as Angola, Costa-Rica, Egypt, Zimbabwe and Kenya to all Europe countries, Australia, South America countries and the U.S.

In this book you can find not only official releases of the band but also promotional copies that weren't suppose to get to the public. Every country has its own chapter which includes discographies of not only the band but also its members' all in chronological order. The book also includes a selection of test pressings and acetates. All singles are presented in color together with release notes. The writer claims that this is not a full discography, although it includes

The book has a hard cover, is black with a pink stripe on the side, Pink Floyd is written in pink and On Forty-Five is written in white. On the front cover there is a picture of the 7-inch single See Emily Play from Spain and the back cover has a collage of about 25 singles, together with some words about the book.

A personal note: This book is a must have for all Pink Floyd vinyl collectors out there. Any purchase of Pink Floyd stuff makes me happy, but i'm not sure about this one. It makes me think about not being able to obtain all of the 7-inch singles one day...

Have A Cigar - 7" Single - France

סינגל זה שוחרר בצרפת בגירסת ה-7 אינץ' בשנת 1976, לאחר צאת האלבום. הסינגל מכיל שני שירים: Have A Cigar בצד א ו-Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Part 1 בצד ב'. הסינגל שוחרר על ידי Harvest. העטיפה בשני הצדדים היא דומה: הרקע הוא שחור, עליו מצוירת יד הרובוט המפורסמת מעטיפת האלבום המקורי, וליד כתוב שם השיר שבאותו צד.

Have A cigar - הלחן והמילים נכתבו על ידי רוג'ר ווטרס כאמירה נגד היחס המזלזל, הצביעות ורדיפת הבצע בתעשיית המוזיקה בכלל ובחברות התקליטים בפרט. השיר מכיל את המשפט האל-מותי "Oh by the way which one's pink?" שלדברי הלהקה הם נשאלו את השאלה הזאת כל כך הרבה פעמים במהלך הקריירה. משפט זה מראה שהכתוב בשיר הוא נכון, שכל מה שלאנשים אכפת, כל מה שהתעשייה מעוניינת בו, זה רק הכסף והם לא באמת יודעים כלום על הלהקה. בהקלטה המקורית שר במקור הזמר רוי הארפר, שהקליט את אלבומו באותה תקופה באולפן ליד, ונתבקש על ידי הלהקה לעזור להם בשירה. ממקורות שונים נטען שרוג'ר לא היה מסוגל להגיע לטונים שהשיר דורש או שהוא איבד את הקול במהלך הקלטות האלבום Wish You Were Here ודיוויד לא היה מוכן לשיר את המילים האלה בעצמו. בהופעות רוג'ר הוא זה ששר את השיר, חוץ מפעם אחת בה הצטרף אל הלהקה רוי הארפר עצמו בפסטיבל נבוורת' בשנת 1975.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Part 1 - למרות שאף פעם לא נעשתה לשיר הזה חלוקה מדוייקת לכל תשעת חלקיו, על התקליטון רשום רק 'חלק 1'.זהו החלק בו נכנס בפייד-אין סינטיסייזר, אורגן האמונד ולבסוף גם כלי שנקרא מינימוג. בדקה האחרונה של הקטע גם ישנו חלק מסולו הגיטרה של גילמור. הקטע כולו באורך של 3:50 למרות שעל פי חלוקות שונות אורך החלק הראשון צריך להיות קצת יותר משתי דקות. כשרק התחילו להופיע איתו עם השיר, הוא הוצג ללא מספרי החלקים, מאוחר יותר הציגו אותו עם שמות החלקים 1 עד 9. השיר נוגן על כל חלקיו ברצף בהופעות בשנת 1977.

SEE EMILY PLAY הוא הסינגל השני ששוחרר ע"י פינק פלויד. הוא נכתב ע"י סיד בארט והוקלט ב-23 למאי 1967. בסינגל מופיע השיר SCARECROW כצד ב'. בהמשך השיר הופיע ב-3 אוספים, קופסא וההוצאה המחודשת של האלבום הראשון של הלהקה לכבוד 40 שנה לצאתו. הסינגל יצא בארה"ב 3 פעמים ע"י TOWER RECORDS משנת 1967 עד סוף 1968, אך לא הצליח לשחזר את הצלחתו בבריטניה. ההוצאה הזו היא ההוצאה השלישית של ארה"ב וזהו הפריט היקר ביותר באוסף שלי.

השיר דווח כמדבר על בחורה בשם אמילי, שבארט טען שראה פעם כשישן ביער אחרי שלקח סמים הזייתיים. מאוחר יותר בארט אמר שהוא המציא את הסיפור, "...הכל בשביל פרסום". על פי ספרו של ניקולאס שאפנר, אותה בחורה היא אמילי יאנג, בת למשפחה של סופרים ואמנים, אשר קיבלה את הכינוי 'נערת הבית-ספר הפסיכדלית' במועדון ה-UFO.

בארט, מסתבר, לא היה שמח על איך שיצא השיר בסופו של דבר. הוא מחה על פירסומו של השיר, אשר נורמן סמית' הסביר כפחד מפני מסחריות. בזמן הקלטות השיר הוזמן דיוויד גילמור, שלא היה אז בלהקה, לאולפן ע"י סיד. הוא היה מופתע ממה שהגדיר שינוי באישיות של סיד, אשר בכלל לא זיהה אותו למרות ההזמנה לאולפן. במשך שנים גילמור ציין שזהו המפגש שבו סיד השתנה.

ב-1968 פינק פלויד נסעו לבלגיה ושם צילמו לשיר זה ועוד כמה שירים קליפים שיווקיים. סיד לא נסע איתם אז ובמקומו בא גילמור אשר עשה סינכרון שפתיים ביחד עם ריק רייט, לשירה של סיד. בגלגולו הקודם נקרא השיר GAMES FOR MAY וכך הם גם הציגו אותו בהופעות בהתחלה. הבאס-ליין של השיר זהה לזה שהלהקה השתמשה מאוחר יותר בשיר 'להתראות
עולם אכזר' מהאלבום 'החומה'.

הסינגל יצא בארצות הברית בשנת 1980 כחלק מקידום האלבום 'החומה'. זאת גירסת הפרומו ומגיעה בתוך עטיפת נייר שחורה עם הכיתוב COLUMBIA. לעומתה, הוצאה שונה מגיעה בתוך מעטפה בעיצוב דומה לזה של האלבום המקורי, ובנוסף בצד ב' של הסינגל ישנו שיר שונה מהאלבום. השיר מופיע באותה הגירסה בשני צידי הסינגל, בגירסה ערוכה וקצרה יותר מזו אשר באלבום המקורי, באורך 3:41. בגירסה זו של השיר הוצאו כל מיני קולות ורעשי רקע שהוספו קודם לכן לגירסת האלבום, מה שגורם להרבה צלילים וקולות להישמע יותר בבירור כמו קולו של רוג'ר.

Another Brick In The Wall - Part 2 - 7" Single

זהו תקליטון ה-7 אינץ' של הסינגל הכי מצליח של הפלויד אי פעם, בהוצאה ההולנדית. יצא בשנת 1979, כנראה לפני יציאת האלבום החומה. העטיפה מעוצבת בדיוק כמו האלבום עם כיתוב באותו הפונט. בצד הקידמי כתוב רק PINK FLOYD ובצד האחורי את שמות השירים: ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL PART II והשיר ONE OF MY TURNS בצד ב' של התקליטון.

הלייבל של צד א' הוא כחול עם ציור של המורה מהסרט. הלייבל של צד ב' מעוצב בציור החומה.

תקליט קידום מכירות רשמי שיצא באמריקה, זהו אינו בוטלג, אינו גניבת שירים או זיוף אך גם אינו אוסף רשמי של הפינק פלויד מפני שהוא חולק לתחנות רדיו בלבד. מחקירה קטנה שעשיתי לגבי ההיסטוריה של התקליט התברר לי שהוא שוחרר מ-2 סיבות עיקריות:

(1) קידום סיבוב ההופעות של הפינק פלויד ב-1975

(2) חברת CBS הבטיחה לעצמה זכויות הפצה כלל-עולמיות לפינק פלויד אחרי DSOTM. לחברת EMI נשאר רק את אירופה אז הם שיחררו את 'A NICE PAIR' ומאוחר יותר את התקליט הזה במטרה להמשיך את השמעת מוצרי EMI ברדיו. זאת הייתה עיסקת קידום לחלוטין ואין לה קשר להופעות חיות למרות השם, משהו כמו 'עכשיו שראיתם אותם בהופעה, הנה מדגם מאלבומים אחרים שלהם', כלומר גם למטרת קידום מכירות.
